Harris Teetering

Recently, there has been a wild amount of frenzy regarding a potential sale of Matthews-based grocer Harris Teeter.  Speculation is ablaze about what might happen to the regional upscale grocer, which has stores in the Mid Atlantic region and the Southeast.  When The Wall Street Journal reported that Harris Teeter was exploring options for a sale and the chain consulted with J.P. Morgan financial advisors, other chain grocery store names such as Kroger and Publix were mentioned.  However, it is our thinking that the most likely scenario is that a private equity firm will buy the chain and keep its name and branding as-is, and retain the headquarters just outside of Charlotte.

If a sale occurred to Kroger, which is the second-largest grocery chain after Walmart, then we would see a return of the mid-market grocer to the Charlotte market, as well as a return to other markets that have experienced Kroger’s absence, like the Washington, D.C.-metro area.  Kroger, however, is the most typical mid-market grocer in America, which a price point that is more on par with Bi-Lo than Harris Teeter.  Kroger only has a handful of stores in North Carolina currently, in Raleigh and Durham, and if a takeover of Harris Teeter were to occur, this would make Kroger one of the most dominant grocery store chains in the state.

With Publix expanding into the Charlotte metro area, one would think that the quickest takeover for Harris Teeter, its most formidable competitor, would give them a stronghold of the market.  We don’t see this happening either though, because Publix grows a little more organically rather than through acquisition.  Publix is planning on opening stores in Charlotte’s Ballantyne and South End communities soon.

Ultimately, much of the speculation is just that, and like we said our prediction is that the customer won’t notice any changes if and when a transaction occurs.  With the store-swap with Lowes Foods last year in the Charlotte area, we think that Harris Teeter has worked hard to keep its core footprint of suburban markets and up and coming urban areas.

Publix scouts Rock Hill location

(Publix under construction in Tega Cay, photo courtesy Mike K.)

With two Publix stores already under construction just south of Charlotte, in Tega Cay and Indian Land respectively, a third store may be heading to Rock Hill.  Still remaining south of the N.C.-S.C. border, this store would be along Herlong Ave as developers scout a location.  Publix notes that Rock Hill is underserved by upmarket grocers--the city only has one Harris Teeter store, which Publix considers to be its most formidable competitor, and they have one Earth Fare store.  What is most significant about this news is the seriousness of Publix decision to expand in the South Carolina side of the Charlotte market, eventually prompting a potential move into the North Carolina side and into the city of Charlotte itself.  As for the two stores currently under construction, both the Tega Cay store (at 45,000 sq. ft.) and the Indian Land store (at 50,000 sq. ft.) should open before the end of this year.

Publix eyes 2012 opening for Charlotte-area stores

Previously on Grocerying, we talked about Publix entering the Charlotte market through a site just south of the N.C.-S.C. state line in Tega Cay, in York County, South Carolina. Now it looks like the Lakeland, Florida-based grocer is securing a second site in the neighboring Lancaster County, South Carolina community of Indian Land, just south of the Charlotte city limit. The Charlotte Business Journal is reporting that the second Publix in the Charlotte region will be in a development called Cross Creek Center off Hwy 521 at Doby's Bridge Road. The grocer anticipates its Charlotte area stores will open in October of 2012.

The intriguing portion of Publix' entry into the Charlotte market is that their stores will remain below the state line for the foreseeable future. We have to wonder if this has to do with saturation of similar mid-to-upscale market retailers such as Harris Teeter and Lowe's Foods already in the immediate Charlotte region. In addition to South Carolina, Publix has stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. More to come as this develops.

Publix eyeing Charlotte (again)

Previously we speculated that either Publix or Kroger would enter the Charlotte market through a buyout of Bi-Lo store locations. Now, The Charlotte Business Journal reports that Publix is poised to enter the market through a location just south of Charlotte and the NC/SC state line in Tega Cay. If Publix does pursue this location, it would be the first time a major non-specialty chain grocer entered the market since Lowes Foods did in 2005. It should be noted that this is not the first time Publix has tried to enter the Charlotte market, they previously scouted sites in 1993 and 1994.
The closest Publix stores are currently in the Columbia and Greenville-Spartanburg areas of South Carolina. The effort from Publix to expand in Charlotte may be seen as gutsy, as Harris Teeter continues its reign on its home market, and Food Lion continues to expand its namesake store and Bloom concept store. Could Kroger and/or Publix be headed to Charlotte?

Reuters is reporting that Mauldin, S.C.-based Bi-Lo is up for sale again. If you recall, last year Food Lion was announced as a potential bidder for Bi-Lo until Lone Star Funds, Bi-Lo's parent company, announced that Bi-Lo was no longer for sale. The chain has been teetering on highs and lows, while expanding their stores in some markets such as Columbia they have completely pulled out of other markets like the Triad after selling their stores to the failed Southern Family Markets. Reuters reports that Bi-Lo emerged from bankruptcy in March of this year.

Kroger and Publix are reportedly the top contenders for Bi-Lo. If this is the case, it brings the potential for Publix to enter the Charlotte market and for Kroger to reenter the market. However, we're not sure if this exactly will happen as it might be more likely and logical for grocery stores that are currently in the market to take over stores, most notably stores that already have: Food Lion/Bloom, Super G Mart, Compare Foods. Bi-Lo has closed a number of stores in the Charlotte region in recent times, two on Independence Boulevard, one in Dilworth and one on Little Rock Road to name a few. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what continues to unfold in the Bi-Lo saga.

Publix - Columbia

This very unique Publix store in Columbia is the result of an adaptive reuse plan in the central city, and it is a former printing plant from the mid 1800s that is now an upscale grocery. The Photo is courtesy the Columbia Development Corporation, and more photos, information and the history of this building can be found here. Furthermore, it is important that we bring up Publix because it has been rumored for a while that they might be taking their business one state north to NC - finally, maybe? I guess we'll just have to stay tuned.

Publix - Merchant's Village, Charleston, SC

Although Publix has no North Carolina presence, they cover the majority of South Carolina markets with their stores. The Lakeland, Florida-based company has this store in Charleston. (Pic courtesy Regency Centers online)
